Malton Coachworks, which currently has three premises on the town’s industrial estate, is to expand into a further three units, creating up to 20 extra employees.
The current units house the company’s mechanical workshop, bodyshop/paintshop and vehicle interior trim shop, where they recently bespoke re-trimmed Formula One driver Lando Norris’ Land Rover Defender before it headed to Monaco.
Malton Coachworks CEO James Szkiler has now agreed a deal to take on the extra units, taking on a complex and yard that will prove to be a future classic car venue for meets and open days.
James said: “The additional premises will create up to a further 20 jobs providing a second mechanical workshop facility, secondary bodyshop to facilitate just welding and fabrication work, and a further building with offices, a stores department hq, training school and media centre.”
James said the expansion was due to continued high levels of classic car sales globally, along with a growing level of classic car restoration work.
“Malton Coachworks, part of the West Knapton-based Classic & Sportscar Centre, currently employs around 45 people, and this expansion will help the business continue to meet demands and further grow.
“Having been in business for 34 years, the Group are one of the most prominent classic car retailers in the UK, and the Malton Coachworks operation continues to expand.”
Classic & Sportscar Centre was set up in 1991 in Huddersfield by James’ father Nick.
The business relocated to Ryedale seven years later and in 2006, Nick’s son James took over the running of the company which later expanded to include Malton Coachworks offering classic car restoration and maintenance.
“The Malton Coachworks departments started in 2010 with just two employees, it’s now one of the largest classic restoration businesses in the North with projects currently being carried out for clients all over the country to include Inverness, Newcastle, Ascot and Merseyside.”
James said the company’s profile was also rapidly growing around the world as well.
“Last year I personally interviewed former F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell at Goodwood Festival of Speed and we’ve recently supplied a rare Lagonda for almost £600,000 that will be competing in next years famous Mille Miglia 1000 event in Italy.
“This creation of new space gives the Company the opportunity to take on more work, and create further local job opportunities, as well as putting Malton firmly on the map for classic car owners all over the country.”
