Barnard Castle
Perched high on a rocky outcrop above the River Tees, Barnard Castle is one of County Durham’s most impressive historic landmarks. The castle takes its name from its 12th-century founder, Bernard de Balliol, and was later developed by the powerful Beauchamp family before passing into the hands of Richard III.

Today, the dramatic ruins overlook the beautiful Tees Gorge and the charming market town of Barnard Castle — affectionately known by locals as “Barney.” The combination of rich history, stunning scenery, and a welcoming town atmosphere makes this a fantastic destination for a family day out or a scenic stop while exploring Teesdale.
As you explore the castle grounds, look out for Richard III’s boar emblem carved above a window in the inner ward, a reminder of the castle’s royal connections. Visitors can also enjoy the peaceful sensory garden, filled with scented plants and tactile features designed to enhance the experience for all ages.
With panoramic views, fascinating medieval history, and plenty to see and do nearby in the town itself, Barnard Castle is a must-visit attraction in the Teesdale area.
