MP praises bookshop for encouraging a love of reading

The Wonky Tree Bookshop in Leyburn runs two book clubs which aim to bring people together to share the love of reading.

The clubs meet monthly, one in the shop and a second club for men in the nearby Golden Lion pub. Members discuss the chosen books – sold at a discount by The Wonky Tree – over tea and coffee in the shop, or a pint in the pub.

Rishi Sunak, who visited the shop in the Market Place, recently, said: “I applaud this initiative to help people get the most out of their reading in a friendly, sociable setting.”

Claire and Alan Flack opened The Wonky Tree Bookshop in 2022 after moving to the Dales from the South-West of England. The name of the bookshop is derived from a tree at the end of the lane to their Devon smallholding, which helped people find their home.

Claire said: Our aspiration is to nurture a community of people who love reading and talking about books. We wish to create an incredibly special place where reading flourishes.”

Local councillor Karin Sedgwick said Claire and Alan had made a big contribution to the local community since their arrival in Leyburn.

“Their work with local schools and residents has been appreciated, she added. “It’s a business that works with the community.”
